The Great Escape
There's an episode from the hit 90s tv show, Seinfeld where Jerry jokes about how a father's attitude shifts to a disregard for the world after having children.
He says that once a man realizes he can create people, he no longer cares about anything other than his family. As a father of one, I find this to be humorous and I think this joke has a level of truth but not all fathers are the same so in the end, it's just a joke... or is it?
If I can generate web traffic to my personal website, why should I care about social media at all? If I can create my own community from scratch, why should I waste my time with an algorithm that refuses to acknowledge my existence?
We all know social media is bad for us, but what the hell are we going to do about it? What can we do at this point? If we never try, we'll never know, so lets figure this out together.
Everyone can't create their own website but does everyone need to? When we visit a store, a restaurant or concert, is there a comment section for us to share our opinions? Can we stop the movie at the theater for live commentary?
If we're only connected because a third party facilitated the interaction, are we really friends? If you follow someone you never talk to, isn't that stalking? Aren't selfies just another form of narcissism? Do we really need to know what we're doing and where we are at all times of the day?
I don't think so.
But hold on, what the hell does that say about me if thats all true? Why should my voice count and not someone of importance? Why should anyone listen to me at all?
Well, they probably shouldn't to be honest but humans do things we shouldn't do all the time. Let the great escape begin!
